Frustration Will Change Your Life

Frustration permeates the air around us. With such a unique holiday season upon us, it makes perfect sense that we’d be feeling more upset than usual. It’s not easy to accept the truth of our situation.

But with all of us going through similar experiences of disappointment and frustration, sadness and anger, we can take away one reassuring truth: we’re not alone.

Just this morning my husband and I were sharing our disappointment for a family we know. They had received some bad news and while it wasn’t our direct experience, our empathy-dar’s seemed to be over responsive to their experience.

At first glance, it may appear that social distancing and the political turmoil has pushed us apart. But in many ways it’s brought us together… in deep and meaningful ways.

Were it measurable, our empathy metrics would be off the charts. Our ability to endure disappointment and frustration has grown into something of a super power, and the volume of random acts of kindness are equally staggering.

It’s no wonder we’re so tired. Transformation is exhausting! But I have no doubt that it’s outcome will be a kinder more thoughtful world for everyone.

That being said, disappointment and anger, sadness and frustration, still permeate our experiences. Our limitations, our losses, and our frustrations are high, and it makes sense that we’re more sensitive to the smaller struggles (and smaller acts of kindness).

It’s as if a layer of our shell has been stripped away and we’re more exposed to life’s ups and downs. So if you need to find opportunities to cocoon this season, or if you find a need to eat that extra tin of cookies without sharing, know that there’s nothing wrong with you.

You’re in the midst of a massive growth spurt, which requires more rest and sustenance. Take care of yourself and know that this struggle you’re going through isn’t for naught. You will come out the other side transformed, grounded, and even more assured of what’s important to you.

Be well,
Anon
